about
Kicking off the Amorphous Sounds Singles Club, Deep Throat Choir release“Like a Mountain” - a reworking of the 1970’s protest song, “You Can’t Kill the Spirit”. The original song was written by Naomi Littlebear Morena in 1977, and became the leading anthem of the Greenham Common Women’s Peace Camp - a live-in occupation and protest movement against nuclear armament, spanning over 20 years.
In respect of Naomi’s own work advocating for, and supporting survivors of domestic violence, this single is running as a fundraiser, with all proceeds going to Sistah Space - a local community based non-profit initiative created to bridge the gap in domestic abuse services for African heritage women and girls.
lyrics
She is like a mountain
You can’t kill the spirit
She is like a mountain
Old and strong
She goes on and on
Nobody can push back an ocean
It’s gonna rise back up in waves
And nobody can stop a wind from blowing
Stop a mind from growing
And somebody may stop my voice from singing
But the song will live on
And somebody may stop my voice from singing
But the song will live on
You can’t kill the spirit
She is like a mountain
Old and strong
She goes on and on
Eh eh eh eh
Nobody can stop a woman from feeling
She has to rise up like the sun
Somebody may change the words we’re saying
But the truth will live on and on
Somebody may stop my voice from singing
But the song will live on
Somebody may stop my voice from singing
But the song will live on
You can’t kill the spirit
She is like a mountain
Old and strong
She goes on and on
Can’t kill the spirit
She’s like a mountain
Old and strong
On and on
